'Seemed like high time to make the cover a little more formal. Now it looks like I have a little floral torso sitting in the craft room, lol.
<p/><center><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53566512432/in/dateposted-family/" title="Spinning Wheel Cover"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53566512432_96224267e4_c.jpg" width="395" alt="Spinning Wheel Cover"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53567367366/in/dateposted-family/" title="Spinning Wheel Cover"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53567367366_838512401f_c.jpg" width="395" alt="Spinning Wheel Cover"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script></center><p/>
Having the little head piece on top makes the wheel easier to move while still covered, as the mother-of-all is easier to see and grab. I've been debating making a ripstop carrying bag for awhile, but realized I don't travel with my wheels <em>that</em> often, so a nicer cover for when they sit at home makes a lot more sense.
<p/><center><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53567807025/in/dateposted-family/" title="Spinning Wheel Cover"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53567807025_eae95670f3_c.jpg" width="395" alt="Spinning Wheel Cover"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53567687494/in/dateposted-family/" title="Spinning Wheel Cover"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53567687494_61ed135315_c.jpg" width="395" alt="Spinning Wheel Cover"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script></center><p/>
I improvised by measuring the widest portion of each dimension, rounded up, and added an inch for seam allowance. This approach has made the cover reverseible, so I don't have to always have the wider end covering the wheel. Not sure how I feel about it. Sewed with a 3/8" seam allowance, and finished the raw edges with a zigzag stitch. Bottom edge is finished with bias binding from <a href="https://byov.blogspot.com/2021/10/gold-n-green-gemstone-throw-quilt.html">leftover quilting cotton</a>. <center><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53559925844/in/dateposted-family/" title="Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53559925844_804be50f9c_c.jpg" width="800" height="800" alt="Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script></center><p/>
This is <a href="https://smittenkitchen.com/2008/08/chocolate-peanut-butter-cake/">SmittenKitchen's Peanut Butter Cake</a>. It is very effortful (lots of refridgerating cycles) and very intense. We ended up getting 16 slices out of it, most of which are in the freezer. Individual slices thaw *beautifully*.
<p/>
'Would make again, if I want to spend 4 hours on a delicious cake with weeks of cake leftovers!

However, the instructions for this aren't readily available anywhere, I figured it out by adapting <a href="https://www.seamwork.com/articles/how-to-do-the-burrito-method-on-a-lined-yoke">another set of instructions</a>. The <a href="https://sewliberated.com/products/nocturne-pajamas-pattern"> Sew Liberated Nocturne Top<a/> is a double-yoked top that typically has sleeves (although can be adapted to sleeveless with bias binding). If yopu combine this burrito method with French seams and [typical] folded hems, you can enclose <em>all</em> the raw edges of the top. This is great for fabrics that easily fray, increasing sturdiness of garments, and just generally looking nice.
</p>
Enlosing all the seams has the side effect, for this top, of making it difficult to tell which way is right side out! The photos of the three tops in this post are all the shirt inside out. It's a very clean finish for a handmade garment.
<p/><center><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53506568386/in/dateposted-family/" title="How To: Enclose all the seams in a double-faced, double-yoked top"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53506568386_47619c0050_c.jpg" width="800" height="800" alt="How To: Enclose all the seams in a double-faced, double-yoked top"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> </center><br/>
<p/><em>Step 0: Cut out the two front yoke pieces, two back yoke pieces, and front and back</em>
<br/><center> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53505676902/in/dateposted-family/" title="Step 0: The pieces"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53505676902_f32052e4d1_c.jpg" width="800" height="800" alt="Step 0: The pieces"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script></center><br/>
<p/><em>Step 1: Assemble Front Yoke</em>
<br/><center><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53506877584/in/dateposted-family/" title="Step 1: Assemble the front yoke."><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53506877584_d0a194dbe6_c.jpg" width="800" height="800" alt="Step 1: Assemble the front yoke."/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script></center><br/>
Right-sides together, sew front yoke pieces together along the neck line (not the shoulders!). Neckline may require smaller seam allowance than the shoulders.
<p/>Follow any instructions for finishing the front yoke neckline. (Grade seams, clip into notch, cut corners, snip toward seam,
iron seam toward facing, flip right-side out, understitch neckline
facing, iron, etc. etc. )
<p/><em>Step 2: Attach back to yoke pieces</em>
<br/><center><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53506877599/in/dateposted-family/" title="Step 2: Assemble the back + back yoke"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53506877599_b4d34d0feb_c.jpg" width="800" height="800" alt="Step 2: Assemble the back + back yoke"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script></center><br/>
Follow any instructions for fitting the Back to the
Back-yoke pieces. (Two sets of basting/gathering stitches along the top, between the
notches. Pull threads until top of Back is same width as bottoms of
Back-Yoke pieces, distribute gathers, etc. etc.)
<p/>
Right-sides of Back-Yoke pieces
facing either side of the Back
(upside down), align notches & sew.
<p/>Grade seams & iron both
Back-Yoke pieces upward, so
they align at top.
<p/><em>Step 3: Baste the yoke shoulders</em>
<br/><center><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53506877579/in/dateposted-family/" title="Step 3: Baste at the back & front yokes' shoulders"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53506877579_f529920a0e_c.jpg" width="800" height="800" alt="Step 3: Baste at the back & front yokes' shoulders"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script></center><br/>
Letting the Back Yoke Facing fall down/away, place
right-side of Front Yoke onto right-side of Back Yoke,
aligning the shoulder edges.
<p/>Baste the shoulder seams at
a seam allowance just under the
final seam allowance amount.
<p/><em>Step 4: Make the burrito</em>
<br/><center><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53506990825/in/dateposted-family/" title="Step 4: Burrito Method"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53506990825_45239b2ba7_c.jpg" width="800" height="800" alt="Step 4: Burrito Method"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script></center><br/>
With the Back-Yoke-Facing still down/out of the way,
roll the Back piece up from the bottom into a tight
“burrito.” Near the top, roll up the Front-Yoke as well.
<p/>Keep rolling the burrito until
the shoulders of the Back-Yoke-
Facing are accessible.
<p/>
Wrap the Back-Yoke-Facing
around the burrito, aligning its
shoulder edges with the
previously basted shoulder edges.
<p/><em>Step 5: Sew shoulders, neck</em>
<br/><center><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53506568201/in/dateposted-family/" title="Step 5: Sew the shoulders and neck"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53506568201_5d48cd4305_c.jpg" width="800" height="800" alt="Step 5: Sew the shoulders and neck"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script></center><br/>
Pin the shoulder edges together through all 4
layers of facing fabric, aligning notches as needed.
Ensure no burrito gets in the way! Repeat for the neckline.
<p/>Sew, the shoulders and neckline, ensuring you’re
catching only the 4 layers of facing fabric, not burrito!
Pivot as you transition from shoulder<->neckline. Neckline may require smaller seam allowance than the shoulders!
<p/>Grade the inseams, snip around the neckline, and pull
the burrito out through one of the armscye. Iron.
<p/><em>Step 6: Decide front style</em>
<br/><center><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53506990805/in/dateposted-family/" title="Step 6: Decide which front styling to go with"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53506990805_bbe1e5abae_c.jpg" width="800" height="800" alt="Step 6: Decide which front styling to go with"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script></center><br/>
We’re going to attach the Front, sandwiched between
the Front-Yokes. We need to decide if we want to
stitch-in-the-ditch on the visible side (attach Front to
Front-Yoke-Facing first) or have a visible top-stitch
across the front (attach Front to Front-Yoke first).
<p/>Let’s go with a visible top-stitch.
<br/>Follow pattern instructions for any gather stitches, pulling to get the Front piece the right width
for the Front Yoke pieces.
<p/><em>Step 7: Assemble the front</em>
<br/><center><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53506877669/in/dateposted-family/" title="Step 7: Assemble the front to front yoke faci ng"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53506877669_334fe78477_c.jpg" width="800" height="800" alt="Step 7: Assemble the front to front yoke faci ng"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script></center><br/>
Fold & press the bottom 1/4” of the Front-Yoke,
toward the wrong-side. Move the Front-Yoke out of the
way.
<p/>Pin & sew the right-side of the Front-Yoke-Facing to
the wrong-side of the Front. Iron.
<p/><em>Step 8: Attach front yoke</em>
<br/><center><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53506990905/in/dateposted-family/" title="Step 8: Attach front yoke to front"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53506990905_ea350c9fdf_c.jpg" width="800" height="800" alt="Step 8: Attach front yoke to front"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script></center><br/>
Flip the Front-Yoke over that most recent seam,
aligning its folded edge 1/8” past the seam.
<p/>Sew and iron into place.
<p/><em>Step 9: Finish side seams, hem, sleeves, etc.</em>
<br/><center><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53507001295/in/dateposted-family/" title="Step 9: Finish the side seams, hem, sleeves, etc."><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53507001295_7000d120c0_c.jpg" width="800" height="800" alt="Step 9: Finish the side seams, hem, sleeves, etc."/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script></center><br/>
Finish side seams and hem as desired/pattern
instructs. Add sleeves, etc. etc.
<p/>Done!

This should be the last one for awhile, a third gift set! I made this one first, you can tell because I forgot to take photos of it...
<p/>

<p/>
Shirt is in pink bubble gauze from JoAnn Fabrics. Size 12 and likely an inch added to the length of body and sleeve. All raw edges enclosed via the burrito method and French seams...makes it tricky to determine which way is the right side out!
<p/>
Pants are size 12 made in flannel from JoAnn Fabrics. 2 inches added to calf length, plus an inch added to the hem. Added buttonholes to the front waistline to have a drawstring. Seams [mostly] finished as French seams.
<p/>
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53523355923/in/dateposted-family/" title="Sew Liberated - Nocturne Top"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53523355923_31438c8678_c.jpg" width="395" alt="Sew Liberated - Nocturne Top"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53522287637/in/dateposted-family/" title="Sew Liberated - Nocturne Top"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53522287637_3f96fffe02_c.jpg" width="395" alt="Sew Liberated - Nocturne Top"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<p/>
Second shirt is flannel from JoAnn Fabrics. Size 10 (smaller than the first one, as the flannel is not as drapey as the gauze) with an inch of gathers removed from the front/back, and likely an inch added to the length. Sleeve is a custom-length, too. Whatever could fit on the fabric I had remaining. All raw edges enclosed via the burrito method and French seams.

<p/>
A bubble gauze Nocturne Top! One of <a href="https://byov.blogspot.com/2023/12/memade-clothing-2-nocturne-tops-in.html">my favorite daytime pajamas</a> that can also definitely work as actual pajamas. Bubble gauze from JoAnn Fabrics. Size 12 and likely an inch added to the length of body and sleeve (should size down next time, forgot to on this one!). All raw edges enclosed via the burrito method and French seams...makes it tricky to determine which way is the right side out!
<p/>
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53523221861/in/dateposted-family/" title="Sew Liberated - Nocturne Pajama Pants in Fun Plaid"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53523221861_34597ddde0_c.jpg" width="395" alt="Sew Liberated - Nocturne Pajama Pants in Fun Plaid"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53523221851/in/dateposted-family/" title="Sew Liberated - Nocturne Pajama Pants in Fun Plaid"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53523221851_b9b26129c4_c.jpg" width="395" alt="Sew Liberated - Nocturne Pajama Pants in Fun Plaid"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<p/>
Pants are size 12 made in flannel from JoAnn Fabrics with bubble gauze for the pockets and drawstring. 1-2 inches added to calf length,an then a hem that's likely much wider than the previous pair (needed it shorter than the <a href="https://byov.blogspot.com/2024/02/memade-clothing-dachsund-nocturne-pj.html">previous pair</a> as this recipient is a pinch shorter than the first one!). Added buttonholes to the front waistline to have a drawstring. Seams [mostly] finished as French seams, especially since this fabric really liked to fray.
<p/>
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53522324147/in/dateposted-family/" title="Nocturne Top in Fun Plaid"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53522324147_e938e533d7_c.jpg" width="395" alt="Nocturne Top in Fun Plaid"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53523392953/in/dateposted-family/" title="Nocturne Top in Fun Plaid"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53523392953_2d3c9cbda8_c.jpg" width="395" alt="Nocturne Top in Fun Plaid"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<p/>
By some unexpected surprise I had enough leftover fabric from the pants to make this top! Flannel is from JoAnn Fabrics. Top is a size 10 with an inch of gathers removed from the front/back (remembered to use the sized down version this time!), and likely an inch added to the length. Sleeve is a custom-length, too. Whatever could fit on the fabric I had remaining. All raw edges enclosed via the burrito method and French seams.

<p/>
Several months after being on <a href="https://byov.blogspot.com/2023/12/memade-clothing-2-nocturne-tops-in.html">the</a> <a href="https://byov.blogspot.com/2024/01/memade-clothing-2-nocturne-tops-in.html">previous</a> <a href="https://byov.blogspot.com/2024/01/memade-clothing-2-nocturne-short-sleeve.html">Nocturne</a> <a href="https://byov.blogspot.com/2024/01/memade-clothing-nocturne-sleeveless.html">pattern</a> <a href="https://byov.blogspot.com/2024/01/memade-clothing-2-winter-nocturne.html">kick</a>, I went back to make up this simple pattern as holiday gifts. This is, as before, the <a href="https://sewliberated.com/products/nocturne-pajamas-pattern">Sew Liberated Nocturne Pajama Set pattern</a> with soem sizing modifications below. 'Had to do some guessing about sizes and modifications for the recipients, but I think it turned out alright. On the bright side, pajamas don't need to be a perfect fit, so long as you oversize a pinch.
<p/>

<p/>
The top is made in Dachsund flannel from JoAnn Fabrics and sleeves in scrap bubble gauze also from JoAnn's, leftover from another portion of this recipient's gift. Size 10 with an inch of gathers removed from the front/back, and likely an inch added to the length of body and sleeves. All raw edges enclosed via the burrito method and French seams. Also, a little wrinkly from being packaged up in the box!

<p/>
The pants are a size 12 (recipient wanted a "large") made in dachsund flannel from JoAnn Fabrics. 2 inches added to calf length, plus an inch added to the hem. Added buttonholes to the front waistline to have a drawstring. Seams [mostly] finished as French seams. I accidnetally cut two of the same leg, so had to piece together scraps in order to convert the one leg to the correct orientation. <p/>
Impressive how some fabrics don't scream PAJAMAS until you turn them into pajamas. And then. There you are.
<p/>
This is a three-quarters view of the Nocturne Pajamas for chillier spring nights. The Sew Liberated Nocturne Top is a size 12 with 2.5" added to length (because, tall). About ~1" of gathering fabric removed from the front, 1" from the back (by moving the pattern pieces just past the fabric fold when cutting). All raw edges enclosed via burrito method and French seams. I used Joann Fabrics light aqua double gauze and viscose in a semi-complementary blue plaid (not too matchy matchy!).
<br/>
Pants are a size 16 with an improvised capri length (I think the bottom lengthen/shorten line, after I added 3" to the length?). Even more excitingly, I added two buttonholes (backed with some interfacing) an inch apart on the front waistband before assembling, stitched a zigzag seam ~3/8" from the edge on the elastic, and then strung a complementary drawstring through (2" wide tri-fold bias strip, doing what it does best).
<p/>
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53445873744/in/dateposted-family/" title="Nocturne Pajama Set - Long"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53445873744_8ea02b19de_c.jpg" width="395" alt="Nocturne Pajama Set - Long"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53445964400/in/dateposted-family/" title="Nocturne Pajama Set - Long"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53445964400_716a64bdf9_c.jpg" width="395" alt="Nocturne Pajama Set - Long"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<p/>
This Nocturne Top is a size 12 with 2.5" added to length. ~1" of gathering fabric removed from the front and back (by moving the pattern pieces just past the fabric fold when cutting). All raw edges enclosed via burrito method and French seams. I used Joann Fabrics light aqua double gauzeand viscose in a semi-complementary blue plaid for the yoke and pants pockets.
<p/>
Pants are a size 16 with 3" added at the lengthen line, another 1" at the cuff, and then a 1.25" double-folded hem. Also, 1/2" full seat adjustment to address a bit of a wedgie issue I've been having going up/down stairs with previous pairs. I also added 2 buttonholes, backed with some interfacing, 1" apart on the front waistband before assembling. After assembling, I stitched a zigzag seam ~3/8" from the edge on the elastic, and then fed a 2" wide tri-fold bias strip through the waistband. Maybe now I can put a cell phone in my pocket without losing my bottoms.

Yes, yes I am.
<p/>
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53445963915/in/dateposted-family/" title="Nocturne Pajama Set - Sleeveless"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53445963915_6b9328cff0_c.jpg" width="395" alt="Nocturne Pajama Set - Sleeveless"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53445687048/in/dateposted-family/" title="Nocturne Pajama Set - Sleeveless"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53445687048_deb288e870_c.jpg" width="395" alt="Nocturne Pajama Set - Sleeveless"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<p/>
A few extra hacks on this Nocturne top: it's a size 12 with 2.5" added to length (as always). All raw edges enclosed via burrito method. I added in flat piping from a 1.5" bias strip as I attached the front yoke to the front of the shirt to coordinate with the contrast back yoke. I made this sleeveless using more 1.5" bi-fold bias strips.
<br/>
All the PJ tops also have about ~1" of gathering fabric removed from the front, and up to 1.5" from the back (just by moving those pattern pieces just past the fabric fold).
<br/>
I used two colors of Joann Fabrics Double Gauze and mauve check viscose for the pockets to coordinate with my other two PJ shorts sets. Shorts are a size 16 with a 6.5" inseam using the <a href="https://helensclosetpatterns.com/2020/06/17/arden-shorts-hack/">Helen's Closet Arden Shorts Hack<a/>, w a squared-off outer seam (as in the previous post).

<p/>
This one was the last top I made, made from scraps of all the rest of the Nocturne Pajamas, and I actually purchased slightly less fabric than the pattern recommended...this is why the bulk of this color block tank is made with the 60" Joann Fabrics double gauze, and not the 45" viscose plaid prints! It's a size 12 with 2.5" added to length. All raw edges enclosed via burrito method. I made this sleeveless using 1.5" bi-fold bias strips. ~1" of gathering fabric removed from the front and back, just as in previous versions. I'm really digging the 1.5" flat piping with the plaid fabric here...although, I should've made it bias cut so that it stretches, rather than flips up, when worn. You live & you learn!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1641173667495494214.post-68508864030075709482024-01-14T12:00:00.017-05:002024-02-04T09:31:47.396-05:00MeMade Clothing: 2 Nocturne Short Sleeve Pajama SetsI know you're wondering where the rest of my one million <a href="https://sewliberated.com/products/nocturne-pajamas-pattern">Sew Liberated Nocturne Tops</a> are. <p/>
The top is a size 12 with 2.5" added to length in a Joann Fabrics viscose and double gauze. Shorts are a size 16 with a ~4.5" inseam, keeping the tapering, using the <a href="https://helensclosetpatterns.com/2020/06/17/arden-shorts-hack/">Helen's Closet Arden Shorts Hack</a>...although I must've cut sloppy and had to get some of that inseam back by making the hem shorter. I did the burrito method and French seams for the top, so all the raw edges are enclosed! And then...I did not do any of that fanciness for the shorts, lol.

The least wrinkled these Sew Liberated Nocturne PJs will ever be! A coordinating set to go with the other one! The top is a size 12 with 2.5" added to length in a Joann Fabricsviscose and double gauze. Shorts are a size 16 with a 6.5" inseam using the <a href="https://helensclosetpatterns.com/2020/06/17/arden-shorts-hack/">Helen's Closet Arden Shorts Hack</a>, although I squared-off the outer seam. I also did some tacking stitches at the top/bottoms of the pocket openings to secure those spots. Just as before, the top has all raw edges enclosed via burrito method & French seams and then I was lazy with the shorts.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1641173667495494214.post-31214442589000315602024-01-07T12:00:00.020-05:002024-02-02T21:33:21.695-05:00MeMade Clothing: 2 Nocturne Tops in Gingham<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53445888989/in/dateposted-family/" title="Nocturne Top in Black Check"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53445888989_6a5f3d5709_c.jpg" width="395" alt="Nocturne Top in Black Check"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53445567041/in/dateposted-family/" title="Nocturne Top in Black Check"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53445567041_8cc73f5e47_c.jpg" width="395" alt="Nocturne Top in Black Check"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<p/>
While the second <a href="https://sewliberated.com/products/nocturne-pajamas-pattern">Sew Liberated Nocturne Top</a> in this post was not 💯 because of fabric choice, the fit was finally (finally) there! This is a size 12 with 2.5" added to length in a Joann Fabrics viscose. Much better drape, much better fit. Only had to size down by...2! As always with check prints, I put the yokes on the diagonal so I don't have to worry about pattern matching.

<p/>
I made a fabric choice mistake with this Sew Liberated Nocturne Top. Shirting fabric from Joann Fabrics has too much structure! If it's not tucked in, it looks like a maternity shirt. And I don't really care for how it looks tucked in to mid-rise elastic bottoms (most of my bottoms). I could probably completely disassemble the top and severely reduce the gathers to have less "poof", but that's a lot of work...Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1641173667495494214.post-48824078304940683232023-12-31T12:00:00.015-05:002024-01-31T17:10:00.993-05:00MeMade Clothing: 2 Nocturne Tops in Double GauzeBe forewarned, I've made a million of the <a href="https://sewliberated.com/products/nocturne-pajamas-pattern">Nocturne Tops frm Sew Liberated</a>. <p/>
Infinity bathroom mirror photo, CLASSIC.
<p/>
My upper bust for the Nocturne Top put me at a size 16 originally, which is what I made with the red Mood Fabrics Double Gauze...but this is HUGE. I'll try sizing down next time. Also added 2.5" of length, because tall. In this Mood Fabrics double gauze, I really am wearing daytime pajamas! Worn here with my elastic waist free range slacks posted in the previous image!
<p/>
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53445695858/in/dateposted-family/" title="Nocturne Top in Tan Gauze"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53445695858_be7046623b_c.jpg" width="600" height="800" alt="Nocturne Top in Tan Gauze"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<p/>
Sized down this time with the tan version, definitely needs another size down! This is a size 14 with 2.5" added to length. I also cropped ~7" off the 3/4 sleeve length for this mid-length sleeve. This Joann Fabrics cotton gauze is so lightweight, combined with the balloon-ness of the back of the shirt, it feels like barely wearing anything. More work-appropriate daytime pajamas!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1641173667495494214.post-77277354617482386392023-12-24T12:00:00.010-05:002024-01-29T11:06:56.171-05:00MeMade Clothing: Gray Twill Free Range Slacks<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53445682403/in/dateposted-family/" title="Free Range Slacks in Cotton Twill"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53445682403_c7d2646540_c.jpg" width="600" height="800" alt="Free Range Slacks in Cotton Twill"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<p/>
These are a wearable toile of <a href="https://sewhouse7.com/products/freerange-slacks">Sewhouse7 Free Range Slacks</a>. I used pajama elastic for the waistband which is both a great decision (comfyyyyy) and a terrible decision (not great at keeping pants up). Not really sure how to fix the back of the pants falling down so much - probably should've sized up and used stronger elastic, or maybe a larger full seat adjustment.
<p/>
This is something like a size 14, with 3" added in length to the calf, and another 1" at the cuff (to handle my inaccurate cutting). 1.5" or so cut off the top to make them mid-rise.

<p/>
This is Helen's Closet Gilbert Top number 4, I believe it to be a size 12 graded out to a 14 starting around the sternum, with 1.5" added to the length. And I also sliced 1" off the shoulders for added mobility (0.5" the cheat way, 0.5" the slash-and-spread). Also spread that buttons out by an additional 3/4" in both directions. This resulted in the best shoulder fit I've had so far, but it's a little short at the belly, so not quite work appropriate. Number 5! I think it's a size 10 graded out to a 12 starting around the sternum, with 2.5" added to the length. Spread the buttons higher/lower by 3/4". Oh, and the second pocket, too! I think sizing down yet again was likely not the correct move. A little back/shoulder tightness when moving about, but at least the length is spot on! Size up with a 0.5" shoulder adjustment next time?
<p/>
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53444604432/in/dateposted-family/" title="Sleeveless Gilbert Top"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53444604432_791a0c96bf_c.jpg" width="395" alt="Sleeveless Gilbert Top"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53444604362/in/dateposted-family/" title="Sleeveless Gilbert Top"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53444604362_0a25115fcc_c.jpg" width="395" alt="Sleeveless Gilbert Top"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<p/>
Gilbert Top number 6, done with the sleeveless hack from Helen's Closet. And fully enclosed seams! Not a raw edge to be seen! It's a size 10 graded out to a 12 starting around the sternum, with 2.5" added to the length. Buttons are spread higher/lower by 3/4". Sizing down does appear to be the correct move for the sleeveless version. So, perhaps this size (without narrow shoulder adjustment) for sleeveless Gilberts, and the size up (with 0.5" narrow shoulder adjustment) for sleeved-Gilberts. Only took me 6 tries to get here.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1641173667495494214.post-54380070074354634312023-12-10T12:00:00.036-05:002024-01-24T15:41:10.802-05:00MeMade Clothing: A Gathering of Gilbert TopsI've made 6 of these <a href="https://helensclosetpatterns.com/product/gilbert-top/">Helen's Closet Gilbert</a> Tops in order to find the right fit adjustments. The yellow one, while not a flattering color, is the best fit with sleeves, and the sleeveless one is a pretty good size, too.

<p/>
The first of many Gilbert Tops (from Helen's Closet), this one in a Hawaiian theme which is the inspiration for the original shape of the shirt. This is a size 14 graded out to a 16 starting around the sternum, with 2.5" added to the length (talllllllll). My first button placket! First figuring out how to use the buttonhole feature on my machine! <a href="https://www.moodfabrics.com/european-navy-and-sun-baked-red-flamingo-printed-cotton-poplin-119318">Fabric is cotton poplin from Mood</a>.

<p/>
I wanted more room in the arms from the previous Gilbert Top (Helen's Closet)...so I just went up a size, which was not the correct move either. Though, it is roomy! This is a size 16, with 2.5" added to length. The stiffness of the <a href="https://www.moodfabrics.com/bright-white-bird-printed-stretch-cotton-twill-113773">stretch cotton twill (from Mood)</a> gives this shirt more of a lab coat vibe.
<p/>

<p/>
If you cut the pockets & the yoke on the bias, then you don't have to worry about pattern matching! This is a size 12 Helen's Closet Gilbert Top graded out to a 14 starting around the sternum, with 2.5" added to the length. Still not quite what I'm looking for in arm/shoulder mobility. Something with the spread of the collar leads the armscye to move into not ideal position.

I put this skirt down 5 years ago, after pinning the lace to the lining (burnt out from so much effort?), and then only just picked it up recently and finished it in my latest sewing craze! It's been so long, I don't even remember the pattern! It's likely it was self-drafted...It was probably meant to sit at my hips, but now (with a slight hidden zipper adjustment), it's at my waist. Whatever works! I also decided to unpick one side of the two seams and install an inseam pocket. Functional!

These are the <a href="https://truebias.com/products/emerson-pant-short">True Bias Emerson Pants</a> in a medium weight, natural mix linen from fabricsstore.com. Size 12 with a generous full seat adjustment…should likely just size up next time. 5-6” added to the calf-length so they’re not cropped, and some patch pockets added to the back. Always back pockets!!
<p/>
These happen to be a little small with some oddness in the crotch fit. Size up next time, definitiely.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1641173667495494214.post-61996758404243942102023-11-19T12:00:00.003-05:002024-01-17T14:05:03.883-05:00MeMade Clothing: Dani Pants in Ochre<p/>

These are the <a href="https://truebias.com/products/dani-short-pant">True Bias Dani Pants Pattern<a/>, pretty much a size 12, with a full seat adjustment, grading to a 8 in the legs, 3" added to the length (at the bottom), and an inch taken off the top to make them mid-rise.
<p/>
Material is mood fabrics 'Famous Australian Designer Ochre Cotton Twill'. This fabric is hardcore. Very tough, very loud. Maybe meant more for a chore jacket, rather than pants!
<p/>
Back pockets are hand embroidered and inseam pockets are 'Soft Blue Polka Dot Cotton Twill Chambray'. I dropped the pocket facing to show off a bit of the polka dot fabric.

But adapted the <a href="https://helensclosetpatterns.com/product/ashton-top-pdf-pattern/">Helen's Closet ashford top</a> with <a href="https://helensclosetpatterns.com/product/sleeves-expansion-pack-for-the-ashton-top/">sleeves</a> to be a faux-wrap, and attach to the pants bottoms. I also put (my first!) welt pockets on the back, did slash pockets instead of inseam pockets, embroidered the pocket edges, added a few inches in length to the pants, put in 3 thread belt loops, made a matching tie belt (which brings the whole thing together), and various fit updates to the pants.

These <a href="https://truebias.com/products/dani-short-pant">True Bias Dani Pants</a> are basically a pair of flannel pajama pants with a tapered leg, belt loops, and pockets to transform it into workwear. secret pajamas, indeed! <a href="https://helensclosetpatterns.com/product/winslow-culottes/">Helen's Closet Winslow Culottes</a>. This is view C with an additional inch or two (because, tall), with the slash pockets and elastic back waist hacks in a viscose crepe from <a href="https://www.blackbirdfabrics.com/en-us">Blackbird Fabrics</a>. Blind hem is getting better. Not perfect, but an improvement!

A <a href="https://helensclosetpatterns.com/product/ashton-top-pdf-pattern/">Helen's Closet Ashton Top</a> size 12 with facings, the cropped version, with an inch added as I'm tremendously tall. It's the perfect length for mid-rise bottoms, for avoiding tucking-in. Also, did the <a href="https://helensclosetpatterns.com/2019/08/06/ashton-top-hack-low-back/">low back hack</a>, by increasing the back neckline to about 5 inches deep. Scooped a tiny bit from the front neckline, too, for a perfect summery top. Fabric is lightweight linen in apricot from <a href="https://www.fabrics-store.com/">fabrics-store.com</a> from their <a href="https://www.fabrics-store.com/fabrics-doggie-bags-all?content=Linen">"Doggie Bag"/Remnant section</a>.
<p/>
Added the hand-embroidered running stitch to the bottom, before adding the hem facing for a little added interest (and to make it coordinate with my wardrobe a bit better).Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1641173667495494214.post-45897628755811906522023-10-22T13:55:00.019-04:002024-01-07T11:57:55.692-05:00MeMade Clothing: Dani Shorts in Rose<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53444777878/in/dateposted-family/" title="True Bias Dani Shorts in Rose"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53444777878_045939b0ea_c.jpg" width="395" alt="True Bias Dani Shorts in Rose"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

These <a href="https://truebias.com/products/dani-short-pant">True Bias Dani Short</a> are rather similar to the <a href="https://byov.blogspot.com/2023/10/memade-clothing-dani-short-in-brown.html">previous pair</a>. Added the <a href="https://truebias.com/blogs/blog/capsule-wardrobe-belted-dani-pants">belt loop hack</a> and matching belt (1.5" X ~70" or so) to mimic some Eddie Bauer Departure Shorts of which I own 3 pairs. The tie belt makes these look slightly less loungewear than they might otherwise be.
Other mods include: adding 3.5" to the length of the short to get that perfect fingertip length. 1/4" scooped out of the front crotch, and a slight full seat adjustment to the back. These are a size 12, but with the height and back pocket placement of a size 10. Still not 100% satisfied with the rise...A good adventure short, nonetheless!
Material is Sandwashed Cotton from BlackbirdFabrics in Rosewood. Pocket linings are leftover from a <a href="https://byov.blogspot.com/2023/12/memade-clothing-ashton-top-with.html">previous Ashton top</a>.

This <a href="https://truebias.com/products/ogden-cami-sz-0-18">True Bias Ogden Cami</a> is a size 12, but with an added an inch or so to the lining, because otherwise it just landed in a really awkward spot. Did a smaller seam allowance on the straps (to better hide bra straps), and afterward I realized that needs to be accompanied by an enlargement of the strap connection points. Next time!

I used the <a href="https://truebias.com/blogs/blog/capsule-wardrobe-belted-dani-pants">belt loops hack</a> on the <a href="https://truebias.com/products/dani-short-pant"> True Bias Dani Short</a> and made a matching belt (1.5" X ~70").
I only added an inch in length, but skipped the cuff, to keep that fingertip length. These are pretty much a size 12, with a full seat adjustment, I should probably just go up a size. Material is Sandwashed Cotton from BlackbirdFabrics in Deep Mauve. Although, it really reads more as a pleasant chocolate brown. Pocket linings are scraps leftover from the ogden cami I'm wearing.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1641173667495494214.post-47291153044892055232023-10-08T12:00:00.000-04:002024-01-03T13:22:11.433-05:00Last of the 2023 Dahlia Bouquets<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53417215724/in/dateposted-family/" title="Dahlia Bouquet 2023: #4"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53417215724_8f8747c4e8_c.jpg" width="395" alt="Dahlia Bouquet 2023: #4"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/irisphotos/53417058898/in/dateposted-family/" title="Dahlia Bouquet 2023: #4"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53417058898_4037225399_c.jpg" width="395" alt="Dahlia Bouquet 2023: #4"/></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

It's view B in a viscose crepe (same as the sleeves in the <a href="https://byov.blogspot.com/2023/12/memade-clothing-ashton-top-with.html">previous Ashton Top</a> that hangs and looks just like a skirt when it's on. Just to see what happens, I put in two mini box pleats at the elastic back. They aren't noticeable when wearing. Also did a blind hem, although my adjustable foot for that wasn't set up quite right - I don't mind the faux cuffed look here.

As before, it's a size 12 with extended length by an inch (because, tall) and did a rolled hem on the sleeve edges. Both fabrics are from <a href="https://www.blackbirdfabrics.com/en-us">Blackbird Fabrics</a> - a ditsy cotton lawn and a gray-blue viscose crepe, that I can't get to photograph well.
