Hawaii Trip: The Big Island (Hilo)

Time for a little wedding-review break! 'How about a 9 day trip to Hawai'i Island, with a detour to O'ahu?

Lava Lake in the Halema'uma'u Crater
Truth be told, our flight across to Hawai'i was delayed 4 hours, so we arrived at a ridiculous (to our jet lag) hour. And spent our entire first day under a rented beach cabana. The next day was spent on a 1.5 hour drive through the island to the Hilo side where we saw an orchid garden, and Volcanoes National Park. We walked througha giant lava tube, poked around Desolation Trail, and viewed quite a bit of cooled lava rock. There were also the Pu'u Loa Petroglyphs.

At night, we headed to the Jaggar Museum to see the Kilauea volcano. The lava lake isn't usually visible, but we were so lucky. With J's binoculars, you could actually see the splashes of lava. To see a lava flow up close you can head through the park to Holei Sea Arch and then hike 5 miles on a gravel road. Or you can come from the other direction (Kalapana) and rent mountain bikes from the local entrepreneurs. We didn't have time to do it, but it would've been super cool to see a lava flow up close.
