My general rule of thumb in this kitchen renovation is that so long as its not a downgrade in materials, it's considered an upgrade. The counter top is no exception. We removed the worn-spot original 1940s laminate counter top, and replaced it with a single sheet modern Formica with a satin finish in white painted marble. With a matching beveled edge trim, it really does look quite a bit better! And for only about $500!!
