Kitchen, to the right

Spray painted some Umbra Wallflower Wall Decor to match my kitchen. They're magnetic, so they can stick to pins on a wall, or a refrigerator.

Freckled Strawberry Lemonade

Tuesday, September 29, 2009

2/3 c lemon juice
1/2 c sugar (more if you like it sweet, but no more than 3/4c)
1c sliced strawberries, stems removed (approximately half a pound)
1c smashed strawberries, stems removed
2 peeled lemons (add a third for extra tartness)
2 quarts water

I threw the sugar, 1c whole strawberries, and the lemons into my food processor until it was smoothie-esque. A little chunky is fine. Then I put the mixture, plus the strawberries, lemon juice, and water into a container and shook it up. I made a second batch and am seeing how the concentrate (without water) freezes and defrosts.

I stole this recipe from a friend who's a major lemon fan.

Can anyone identify the red + salmon colored flowers? I got them at the Ithaca farmer's market and I don't know what they are (chrysanthemums?).

Partial Fail: Chocolate Pear Tart

Friday, September 18, 2009

My version of the Chocolate Cookbook's Chocolate Pear Tart is edible, but not aesthetically correct. Next time, I'd reserve some of the egg+whipped cream mixture, then mix the shredded chocolate with the rest of it. Pour that into the crust, add the pears, and pour the reserved egg/cream mixture on them.

Developmental Psychology in Video

Thursday, September 17, 2009

Sociological Images has an interesting post about Piaget's stages of development, accompanied by videos exemplifying the stages. Developmental psychology seems like one of those forgotten concepts. We don't have many memories from when we were 3, not because it was so long ago, but because at 3 years of age, humans can remember very little.

I can distinctly remember having the conservation-of-volume argument with my mother when I was much younger. If you pour water from a short, fat glass to a tall, skinny glass, which one has more water?

How To: Read Blogs through Google Reader

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

[I did a post awhile back for an academic/society blog I belong to on how to add blogs to Google Reader. I'm stealing that information here.]

Google Reader lets you subscribe to this blog's updates-feed, so you can read the blog posts (as they're posted) in one location. Plus, Google Reader will keep track of which posts you have and haven't read!

Instructions

  1. Get a Google account. If you have a Gmail account, this step is already done!
  2. Go to Google Reader.
  3. Click the 'Add a subscription' button in the upper left:
  4. Type the blog-to-be-added's URL (http://byov.blogspot.com/) into the little pop-up textbox:

  5. Click the 'Add' button just right of the textbox.
  6. You've added the blog to your Google Reader Feed! Now just visit Google Reader anytime you wish to read the blog, and it will tell you which posts are new.

Success: Tomato Mozzarella Tart with Basil Crust

Tomato Mozzarella Tart with Basil Crust

The Tomato Tart with Basil-Garlic Crust came out well. Could have doubled the amount of basil in the crust.

I've been working on something...continued.

I finished the block-printed curtain from a previous post. I really dislike hand-sewing curtains, but at least the closet cleanup project is underway.

Success: One Ingredient Ice Cream

Monday, September 7, 2009

TheKitchn's One Ingredient Banana Ice Cream came out pretty well. 'Tasted like banana puree, so I threw in some wildflower honey. I don't have room in my apartment for an ice cream maker, but throwing frozen bananas into a food processor is as simple as it gets.

Another T-Shirt Mod

Wednesday, September 2, 2009

Another t-shirt modification to go with my other two. This one is sashiko-inspired embroidery on a Gap sale shirt. I still need to do the back. Or maybe I don't need to, who knows.

How-To T-shirt Embroidery Tips
The trick for doing embroidery on a stretchy-knit fabric like a T-shirt, is using water-soluble stabilizer. It prevents the shirt from stretching too much and reduces the amount of warping of the image. I also used an iron-transfer pencil (a little too heavily) to transfer my design from paper to fabric.
