Success: Vanilla Rum Meringues

Tuesday, January 27, 2009

[Edit: I put in a photo, for your entertainment. Just don't laugh too hard at my cookie accomplishment. Seriously.]

I made Vanilla Rum Meringue Cookies this weekend with my new hand mixer and they actually came out edible! I won't post a photo though, because the lack of star-icing tip, plus a little browning in the oven made the cookies look rather conspicuous. They were tasty and quite styrofoam-like.

Overall, it's definitely worth doing again, but I'll try peppermint meringues next time and avoid browning them too much.

Success: Kale Mashed Potatos

Saturday, January 24, 2009

Today I made Gourmet's Kale and Potato Puree but with some adjustments from The Kitchn. I also made about half as much, but still ended up with two small bowls of leftovers.

Overall, tasty, but not really anything to tell home about.

[Edit 10/1/2009: In future versions of this recipe, it has come out amazingly well. Really a great, tasty dish.]

Photo from craigslist

There's a post on Ithaca's craigslist with two Eames shell chairs that I saw when I picked out mine. Only, the person is trying to resell them at more than twice what I paid. I was actually considering buying this extra one with a stacking base to resell in Pittsburgh, but convinced myself not to go overboard.

Dilemma

Friday, January 16, 2009

So I bought new plastic glides for my Eames shell chairs with H bases and I'm having trouble replacing them with the new ones. The photo above sort of illustrates my dilemma.

You see, the glide is made of several parts (from "top" to bottom): metal nail/pin + square washer + plastic cap + plastic [circular] foot

My chairs had the washers and cap, but not the foot. I was able to remove the cap and washer (although it was tough), but I don't know how to wedge the new glide in. The square washer and cap fit very snugly. I'm afraid to hammer the glide too hard.

[Edit: I replaced all the glides, it's nothing brute force and bit of patience wouldn't fix. I did, however, break a drill bit trying to remove a broken cap. I ended up needing: a hammer, Ikea wrench (something big to hammer, like a peg), and Pliers]

Closet Color Schemes?

Wednesday, January 14, 2009

Don't mind the disastrous walk-in closet photo above. I'm in the beginning stages of re-organizing it, but first I need a color scheme. I'm torn between the following options:

  1. Beige, Gold, and Persimmon:
    Photo from ApartmentTherapy
  2. Gemtones: Cornflower Blue, Olive Green, Goldenrod, Rose Pink:
    Photo from ApartmentTherapy
  3. Lime Green and Neon Orange:

There is, of course, the small matter of the purple trunk that needs to be covered and hidden somewhere, as none of the proposed color schemes really include purple.

I'm taking some inspiration from Printing by Hand and hand printing my own undyed muslin to cover any necessary storage boxes.

And naturally, the proposed color schemes don't really go along with the rest of my apartment's color schemes. Not the (1) golden yellow and medium gray of the bedroom, nor the (2) red, blue, and yellow of the kitchen, nor the (3) turquoise, lime green, black&white of the office area, nor the (4) red, orange, miscellaneous of the living room, nor the (5) pink and chocolate of the bathroom. Or maybe it works better this way. I guess there sort of are some complementary color pallets in there, somewhere.

I am absolutely in love with Lena Corwin's book, Printing By Hand. It's gorgeous.

New Chairs!!

Wednesday, January 7, 2009

While in Ithaca, I like to peruse craigslist, and buy stuff. I bought 4 Fiberglass Eames for Herman Miller chairs (with H Bases) for $50 each; two blue side chairs, two beige arm chairs. They have the Herman Miller stamp on their base and are upholstered in blue and tan vinyl naugahyde. They have the original delivery paper attached to their base, with a date of April 1958.

Fail: Olive Oil Lemon Cake

Lemon Olive-Oil Cake
[Edit 3/3/10: Made this recipe a third time, it came out great, as the above photo shows.]

I'm not exactly sure what went wrong with this Olive Oil Lemon Cake from Gourmet, but I finally broke down and bought a hand mixer afterward. I used a full lemon's zest and juice, but forgot to swap out and equal quantity of liquid from somewhere else. Additionally, hand beating the eggs just was not working. Overall the cake was too eggy, and we ended up throwing half of it away. Which is a shame, since it received rave reviews all over the place.

[Edit 10/1/09: I eventually remade this recipe with a hand-mixer and it came out delightful. It makes a nice 'breakfast cake'. Highly recommend.]

Success: No Cream Wild Mushroom Sauce

Saturday, January 3, 2009

I've had TheKitchn's No Cream Wild Mushroom Sauce bookmarked for awhile now. It took a bit of time, but it tasted wonderful. And it's very filling. C and I got 6 or so servings out of it. It might even freeze well, for us single-person cooks. It's worth remaking.
